An Italian driver returns to the pinnacle of F1 with one of the Italian brands that has made car racing history
Hinwil, 25thSeptember 2018 – Alfa Romeo and the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team announce that Antonio Giovinazzi will race alongside 2007 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen, completing the driver line-up for the 2019 FIA Formula One season.
Following its tradition of discovering and nurturing young talents, the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 team has appointed the Italian driver to replace Charles Leclerc.
The decision to elect Antonio Giovinazzi is particularly significant in the scope of the project that this season saw the return of Alfa Romeo to the pinnacle of motorsports after a hiatus of more than 30 years. The coming together of Alfa Romeo and the Italian driver was natural, also considering the strong bond that has tied Giovinazzi to the brand from an early age, and is a source of national pride considering that several years have passed since an Italian driver has competed in Formula One.
Giovinazzi made his Formula One debut with Sauber at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix, and has since then competed with the Swiss Team in one more occasion (the 2017 Chinese Grand Prix) and completed several tests and FP1 sessions. He has proven his talent, and shares the goal of achieving ambitious results with the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team.
Marcus Ericsson will continue to be part of the team taking on the role of Third Driver and Brand Ambassador.
Over the past four World Championship seasons, Marcus Ericsson has become an important part of the Sauber family. His experience, positive attitude, and the highly professional level of his work have contributed greatly to the remarkable progress made by the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team. He will continue to collaborate closely with the team with full dedication.
